
The Curriculum
The curriculum needs to include:

Quality lessons in all subject areas and across all curriculum areas.

Lessons that are provided in context with students’ current situations, experiences and interests.

Lessons that meet the needs of all students and that do not infringe upon their cultural beliefs or values.

Integrated lessons that are based on shared beliefs.

Classes where refugee children are taught in their own language before progressing to full time education in the host nation.

Language instruction in country of origin, Greek and nominated countries of future residency to bridge understanding, increase communication and prepare for the future.

Competencies that are equivalent across countries.

Competencies that will allow for future educational and occupational opportunities.

Social justice programs to promote inclusion dispel cultural bias and strengthen community connections.

Support for students to proceed through the liminal space with minimal fear and anxiety.

Structuring to include the curriculum into national curriculum plans.

Structuring to allow for short and long term attendance.

The curriculum is an important part of the classroom space. It is the, “what” and the “how” of student learning. It needs to cater for a group of students that may be very different.
The curriculum needs to be provided by:

Quality, well paid, teachers with the skills and knowledge to manage teaching in difficult circumstances.

Elders who share knowledge and model inclusive practices.

Experienced people to teach practical skills.

Parents and the wider community to share cultural heritage and encourage diversity and acceptance.
Teachers need to

Teach the curriculum in a supportive, positive and inclusive environment.

Structure lessons that benefit students of all levels and from all backgrounds.

Assign incoming refugee students with a local mentor to assist in integration and to increase acceptance.

Provide extracurricular activities to strengthen connections.

Be aware and act to support students that may be victims of bullying or racial hate.
